Welfare Notice to all NPS Members Posted: 2013

NPS
It has been brought to our attention by a number of Members that, at a recent NPS Area Show, a pony was left hobbled on a horsebox, subsequently broke loose and stumbled down the lorry ramp. As a Welfare Society, we take a very serious view of such action, and would like to make it clear that, as far as The National Pony Society is concerned, the hobbling of ponies at Shows is totally unacceptable, and would encourage any Member witnessing such action in the future to report the incident to the Society.

NFU Warning about Chinese Lanterns Posted: 2013

NPS
The NFU is urging people to think twice before buying these flying lanterns. They can reach a height of 1200ft and float for several miles before coming down to earth. As well as being a fire risk, the wire frames do not biodegrade and are a risk to wild and domestic animals that may be entangled or eat them accidently.

Equine Health & Welfare Strategy for Great Britain Posted: 2013

NPS
2010 saw the release of the Equine Health and Welfare Strategy for Great Britain, and the Animal Welfare Act, which came into force on the 6th April 2010. These both have the potential to affect members of the National Pony Society. For details of the Act please see the link to the DEFRA website which is a Resource at the foot of this page. While many of us feel we already adhere to good equine practise the new law allows for greater scrutiny of our husbandry. In particular the duty of care we have to show to our animals to ensure they have the 5 freedoms:
  • A suitable environment
  • A suitable diet
  • To be able to behave normally
  • To be housed with or apart from other animals (whatever is best for that particular animal)
  • To be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
This means that welfare organisations have greater facility to tackle cruelty and abuse.
