New Forest Pony Breeding and Cattle Society - Change at the Top… Posted: April 2016

After some 20 years as Chairman of the New Forest Pony Breeding & Cattle Society Council, Gill Wright has stepped down and hands over the reins to Suzanne Kempe.

Previously on the Council from 1979, Gill followed her mother Joan Wright into the chairmanship in 1996.  She has steered the Society through many changes, including the introduction of passports for all registered and part-bred NF ponies and more recently, the legal obligation to microchip all foals.
Instrumental in introducing grading schemes for both forest run and stud ponies, Gill's most recent and successful brainchild has been the Futurity colt scheme.  There has certainly been very marked improvement not only in the consistent good quality of our ponies, but also in the sale prices.
Gill has worked very hard to maintain good working relationships with our daughter studbooks in Europe and worldwide…not always an easy task!  She will continue in her role as treasurer and takes on the role of President for 2016.

Thank you Gill…it goes without saying that the trustees and membership have much to thank you for!
Suzanne has been on the Society council since 2004 and has been involved with the breed since the 1980s…deriving much fun and success from competing our fabulous breed!  She runs the well-known stud of Rodlease ponies for Avril Darnton, as well as running her own Bullhill ponies on the open forest.  She is a past chairman of the New Forest Pony Enthusiasts Club and the present Chair of British Riding Clubs Area 17, but will be standing down from that position in the autumn.
Suzanne is a NF Panel judge and chairs the Grading and Elite committee and now looks forward to meeting this new challenge.

Rulebook Update Posted: Feb 2016

At a recent meeting of the National Pony Society Council a complaint re class 3 Irish registered Connemara ponies being shown in the UK was discussed. Under BCPS rules
class 3 ponies do not comply with their registration/showing rules. The NPS Council were unanimous in their support for the British Breed Societies and upholding their individual rules.
The following wording is to be added with immediate effect,

"The  showing rules of the British Native Pony Breed Societies, recognised by the National Pony Society, will take precedence in all cases"

Council Elections Posted: Feb 2016

The trustees of the NPS wish to inform you that unfortunately the election of Mrs Taylor to council has had to be void. In discussions with our solicitors about reviewing the constitution we became aware of rule 12.c which prohibits the President from re-standing as President, President Elect or Council for a period of 2 years after her term of office. We therefore have asked the reserve in the election, Mr Mark Sheen to take up the trustee vacancy. The trustees are mindful that Mrs Taylor was the memberships choice for council so Mrs Taylor has generously agreed to be co-opted onto council. We are fortunate to have both on board and look forward to them becoming part of the team

Mrs. Ailsa Pease Posted: Feb 2016

Everyone connected with the National Pony Society was shocked and saddened by the sudden death very recently of Mrs. Ailsa Pease.

She was a highly respected judge for many Societies including the NPS until her retirement, judging at the very highest level and retiring after judging the Hack Championship at Horse of the Year Show.  She judged numerous sections for the NPS over many years and in the days when the Mountain and Moorland classes were ridden, famously rode a Shetland pony (inspite of being tall) to great effect.

She also bred the famous "Lemington" ponies, the stud being started by her mother Mrs. Smith Maxwell. She bred one or two right up to the present which were highly successful in many different spheres, latterly produced by Jerome Harforth. She also bred some famous hacks including Lemington Pavlova.

Our heartfelt condolences go to her family.

The National Pony Society (NPS) Judge’s Conference Posted: Feb 2016

The National Pony Society (NPS) is holding a judge’s conference on Saturday 12th March at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre, Bath Road, Hardwicke, Gloucester GL2  2RG. The day will run from 09.30 until 16.00.

The organisers have structured the day to build upon existing knowledge and judging skills. It will provide a practical basis for assessment of performance in ridden classes both native and plaited.  The arena-based presentations will be led by experts allowing ample opportunity for interactive audience discussions.

Application for tickets priced £15 should be made direct to:
National Pony Society
Arthur Rank Centre
Stoneleigh Park
Tel. 01420 88333

Julie Templeton will highlight the importance of selecting an individual show that reflects both type and breed within the variation of classes a judge may be asked to judge. This will then be related to using marks for the given shows.

Julie Templeton started her equestrian career in eventing but she soon developed a showing interest when she saw a niche in the market for training the children and producing the ponies together. She has been involved in the showing world for over 30 years training and producing horses and ponies from lead rein right through to hunters. She has taken the HOYS Supreme on three separate occasions and notched up countless championships at most major shows. To date she is the most successful lead rein producer at HOYS. Recently she has also dabbled into breeding, being incredibly lucky that her first home bred gained a Cuddy ticket at three years old. Julie has judged extensively both nationally and internationally. She is a BSPS Accredited Trainer, holds her BHS II and is a judge on BSPS, Ponies UK, NPS and CHAPS panels.

Katie Marriott-Payne, using bits and bitting as the underpinning theme for this session, will demonstrate the importance of correct selection and the resultant effect it may have on the way of going of individual animals.

Since leaving school Katy Marriott-Payne has trained, produced and ridden horses and ponies. She makes no secret of the fact that she has been very fortunate to work with some fantastic animals which have won some of the most sought-after titles in the show ring including Olympia supreme, nine Horse of Year show titles, supreme working hunter pony at Royal International and endless county show titles.

Debbie Spears and Anthony Perkins will address all areas of performance within working hunter pony classes including looking at establishing common criteria in awarding marks irrespective of breed or type.

Anthony Perkins previously competed up to advanced level eventing with several homebred horses and sponsor-owned horses. He also trained and rode many horses and ponies to compete successfully at HOYS, Royal International, Olympia and most county shows. Previously he lectured full time in equine colleges in Wales teaching all ranges of equine related subjects up to HND level. He is currently a full time trainer with riders competing in British Eventing, British Dressage and showing. He is a panel judge for several societies including NPS, BSPS, New Forest, PUK and CHAPS.

Debbie Speirs spent her youth at a dealer’s yard where she had the opportunity in addition to hunting compete in show jumping, cross country and showing which included working hunter.  A passion for native ponies followed the purchase of her first highland pony some 30 years ago setting up the small “Leyhills” Highland Stud where the very successful Lochlands Principal Flute stood. She is actively involved with judging and stewarding and is chief horse steward at Bucks County Show. Time away from the show ring she has been the practice manager at a busy equine vet practice for the past ten years where she has valued the experience of developing her knowledge of conformation, foot balance and lameness.

Meirion Davies and Richard Miller will bring a light-hearted, entertaining approach to judging and showing etiquette through a role playing session.

Although most familiar with the Welsh Sections throughout a lifetime’s involvement with pony breeding and showing, Meirion Davies and Richard Miller have produced and shown various native breeds from Shetlands to Connemaras as well as Riding Ponies. The pair have been lucky enough to judge at most major events in the UK as well as worldwide, which in turn has led to them judging, exhibiting and importing stock from around the globe. Richard’s involvement with the pastime of exhibiting ponies coupled with Meirion’s career writing and producing for television has resulted in their “alternative take” on judges’ behaviour in the show ring.

Amnesty for the overstamping of ponies with a Part Bred Passport Posted: 16 April 2014

Eligibility criteria remains basically the same with the exception that if there is parentage and up to three generations of pedigree acceptable for registration with the NPS that are currently registered only as Part Bred; then we will overstamp without incurring the added cost of having to register those eligible and not already registered. Progeny of the overstamped/registered ponies will then be eligible for entry in the Stud Book or Register. There would be a one off cost of £37.50 to members and £50 to non-members and the amnesty will last for two years only.

NPS Stallion Disks Posted: 11 March 2014

From 2014 all ridden stallions competing in NPS classes whether owned by NPS members or non-members are required to clearly display a stallion marker. In order to make this as simple and cost effective as possible for our competitors any stallion marker from any UK horse and pony society (i.e. BSPS, BD, BS etc.) will be acceptable. There are NPS stallion markers available from the NPS office at a price of £2 each including P&P. They will also be on sale at NPS Spring Festival and Summer Champs. These stallion markers must be displayed on the pony's bridle. This is NOT applicable to Horse of the Year Show classes which are run under HOYS rules. Area show organisers may also purchase some discs for their shows.
